The new ECR is a joint effort between the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO). Each examination screens for ocular diseases that are considered inherited, which differ between breeds. Because inherited eye diseases can develop at anytime during an animal’s lifetime, ECR examinations can be performed as early as 6 – 8 weeks of age and are required annually.

Examinations are by appointment for each patient or litter. Clients must arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled appointment time to fill out the necessary forms and to allow time for pupil dilation. Clients bring along all registration paperwork, including microchip information, if indicated.
